Membership Action Plan Workshop | District 9620 (REGISTER HERE)

PDG Stephen and Carol O'Connell from District 9790 have graciously agreed to run a second Membership Action Plan workshop on the north side of Brisbane after the very successful workshop on the 25th May this year. At that workshop, we had 70 people from the district attending and the response was overwhelmingly positive.

The content of this workshop will be very similar to the content of the 25th May workshop, with presentations and interactive sessions to help you learn and develop strategise to help your club:

  • Improve member recruitment
  • Enhance member engagement
  • Increase club member retention rate
Attendees will leave the workshop armed with simple and measurable steps and strategies to revitalize their clubs. The plan has been operating for over 12 months in district 9790, with clubs implementing the strategy typically showing a 20% or more increase in membership in the first 12 months of operation.

Attendance is strongly recommended for:
  • Club Membership committee members
  • Club board members and officers
  • Anyone else in your club interested in increasing your club's membership (please invite your cub members to attend!)
Attendance is free and morning tea and lunch will be provided.

Please arrive at 9:30am for a prompt 10am start.
We are planning to finish the workshop about 2:30pm

Greater Springfield, Sumner Park, Jindalee and the Rotaract Club of Brisbane Rivercity

will host their second annual LIFT THE LID WALK in 2025!

These walks are a great way to spread awareness of the 1 in 5 Australians who are suffering from a mental illness.

ABOUT THE WALK:

The Rotary Club of Mooloolaba together with a number of other Rotary Clubs on the Sunshine Coast has

for the past 8 years, staged a fundraising WALK in October to coincide with Queensland Mental Health Month.

The “point of difference” is that the walk is not a race.

This event is a family occasion offering an organised “fun” walk along the banks of the Brisbane River

for 2.5 kilometres and back.     Walkers have the option to turn around at any time.

The inaugural Walk was held in October 2016 and has grown to include hundreds of participants and

raised over $470,000 over the years.

PROJECT BENEFITS:

This is a great project because it;

1. Raises much needed funds for ARH Mental Health Research

2. Offers an opportunity for the community to identify with those suffering from mental health issues.

3. It provides an outlet for those suffering from mental health issues. For example, every year there have

been families and friends wearing their own special t-shirts honouring a loved one who has

been lost as a result of a mental health issue.

Movie Night - Polio Fundraiser - "The Traveller"
Oct. 20, 2025 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

As we look towards October, we invite you to join us for a special movie night at Red Hill Cinema, in partnership with the Brisbane Rotary Club. This event aims to raise crucial funds for the global fight against polio—a cause that has been championed since 1985. Thanks to the unwavering commitment of Rotarians, we have seen incredible progress, with polio cases reduced by 99% due to vaccination efforts, awareness campaigns, and community engagement.

Mark your calendars for October 20, 2025! Join us for a screening of “The Traveller.”

Be sure to buy your tickets soon—links are provided herein, and they are selling fast! Enjoy the movie and the popcorn!

In recent years, the Polio Movie Event has been incredibly successful in attracting audiences to film screenings to raise funds for Rotary’s number one priority, Ending Polio.  This year, Rotary International have secured an exciting new Australian movie release for this year’s Movie Event. Their partner SONY PICTURES is making this major release available for your special events and exciting social gatherings - a great opportunity for Rotary members and people in our communities to have some fun together!

Luxury Premium Cinema tickets are just $25.00 per person with profit going to Ending Polio. Only 60 tickets available and last year we sold out! Co hosted with our lovely friends at Rotary Club of Paddington.

The Travellers is a poignant, funny and heartwarming family story from acclaimed filmmaker Bruce Beresford.
Stephen Seary, a charismatic and successful stage designer, returns to his small hometown in Australia to say goodbye to his dying mother.  What was to be a quick trip descends into chaos, drama, and at times downright funny moments as Stephen navigates family responsibilities, a difficult relationship with his father, old friends & past lovers, all while trying to return to Europe for a major opera contract.
Written and directed by Bruce Beresford
Starring Luke Bracey, Bryan Brown and Susie Porter with Shubshri Kandiah, Celia Massingham and Nicholas Hammond.

Watch the trailer on YouTube here.

Thank you to our friends at Five Star Cinemas Red Hill for coming to the party with a special fundraising rate.

Amanda Jackes - GM of Woodfordia

Unity and Goodwill: A Woodfordian Invitation

Nov. 20, 2025 7:50 a.m.

TOPIC: Unity and Goodwill: A Woodfordian Invitation

Amanda Jackes shares how Woodfordia and the Woodford Folk Festival embody the spirit of unity and goodwill—values aligned with Rotary’s own ethos of service and community. More than just a festival, Woodfordia is a 500-acre cultural parkland regenerated through decades of collaboration, creativity, and volunteer dedication.

The upcoming 38th Woodford Folk Festival (27 Dec 2025 – 1 Jan 2026) welcomes over 1,800 artists and thousands of participants in a temporary village built on kindness, storytelling, and shared imagination. Amanda introduces the Forest of Goodwill—a campaign to secure Woodfordia’s land in trust for future generations—inviting Rotary members to be part of a legacy of cultural and environmental stewardship.

The talk is a call to connection: an invitation to visit, support, or collaborate, and a reminder that goodwill is a powerful force for shaping the future—together.

Amanda Jackes Bio: Amanda Jackes is the Managing Director and Co-founder of Woodfordia Inc, producers of the iconic Woodford Folk Festival, the innovative festival of The Planting, the national regional touring programme Festival of Small Halls and the holiday camping escape Lake Gkula Camping.  Woodfordia Inc also established the 500 acre venue Woodfordia, a cultural parkland dedicated to the arts and humanities which is underpinned by strong environmental leadership. Woodfordia Inc is a creative and ambitious organisation whose ideology is uniquely expressed in its 500 year plan. Amanda is an enthusiastic leader who achieves through combining creative, practical, optimistic and measurable approaches to community, cultural and environmental engagement.

The Woodford Folk Festival is a vibrant celebration of Australia's rich cultural diversity, featuring over 2,000 local, national, and international artists and musicians across a wide array of genres and art forms. During its six-day run, the festival transforms the rural site of Woodfordia into a bustling hub, effectively becoming the 67th largest town in Australia with an aggregate attendance of around 100,000 people. This significant gathering contributes an estimated $32 million annually to Queensland's economy, underscoring its vital role in the state's cultural and economic landscape. Recognised as the largest assembly of artists and musicians in the country, the festival offers a diverse program that includes music, dance, cabaret, circus, comedy, workshops, debates, street theatre, films, and visual arts, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity and creative expression.

Philanthropy: Love or Money?

Dec. 11, 2025 7:50 a.m.

Philanthropy: Love or Money

Philanthropy is a word that can be hard to pronounce and even more difficult to explain. The definition is simple - love of people. But often we conflate philanthropy with money, wealth or power. Alternatively, giving or generosity are words associated with philanthropy. So what is philanthropy? Is it about love, money, or something else?

Nigel Harris will explore these and other related questions, in discussing philanthropy, philanthropic psychology, the roles of fundraising, volunteering and advocacy, as well as how and why philanthropy plays a critical role in servicing social purpose.

He will also explore the landscape of philanthropy, the not for profit sector, and the role of charities in Australia and internationally.

And Nigel will answer the question of whether philanthropy is about love or money.

BIO:

Nigel Harris is an established and highly regarded non-profit sector leader specialising in philanthropy and fundraising. With an outstanding track record in organisational growth and development, Nigel has crafted a unique range of experiences and insights in governance, executive leadership and applied fundraising practice. He is Managing Director of Nigel Harris & Associates, an advisory and consulting practice specialising in philanthropy and fundraising leadership. He also has affiliations with other agencies in the non-profit sector where he provides specialist advisory services.

Van:

Are you interested in going in the van to deliver sandwiches and a drink to the homeless?  Skye, our contact at Coffee Brigade, has suggested that you book online  https://coffeebrigade.org.au/volunteer  and scroll down to fill in the form.

Then, initially, Skye will match you up with two other experienced volunteers, until you become more experienced. Eventually, if you have indicated your connection with Brisbane High-Rise, Skye will put us together in small teams.

Epic Day of Service Webinar
Jan. 28, 2026 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

What…

On 28 January 2026, at 7 pm AEDT (4 pm AWST, 6:30 pm ACDT, 6 pm AEST, 8 pm Fiji, and 9 pm NZDT) an uplifting webinar will be held with the Epic Day of Service event founders, live from the US. Discover how you and our club can transform a project you’re already passionate about into something truly extraordinary, with the support and spirit of Membership Voice.

Picture the incredible power of every club in our zone coming together, each taking on a project that ignites their passion, all on the same day! Imagine the energy as we unite, side by side, to make a difference and reveal Rotary’s true impact within our communities.

In 2025, Rotarians, Rotaractors, and community partners from five continents, eight countries, 20 states, 57 districts and 539 clubs joined forces in 613 projects, with 6,557 volunteers serving together. Nine of those clubs were ours – just think how much greater our impact will be if we step up even further in 2026. The possibilities are limitless, and the ripple effect of our service can inspire real, lasting change!
